The revamped Mentone Station gardens are now open

Since the Balcombe Road level crossing was removed and the new Mentone Station opened in July this year careful the finishing touches on Mentone’s new open space have been completed

The revitalised Mentone Station gardens incorporate the rich history of the area and include a heritage deck over the rail trench, featuring the old Mentone Station’s heritage-listed buildings. These buildings were preserved during construction works and restored ahead of being opened to the community.

Other features the community will recognise are the five heritage-listed trees – two Norfolk Island pines and three Canary Island date palms – which were protected and tended to while works were underway. Also, the historic Garryowen horse trough sits in pride of place.

The new station gardens include more green space and vegetation and wider paths, with ramps and handrails to improve access for all community members. New trees include subtropical varieties such as the Canary Island dragon tree and the flowering silk floss tree among many others.

This amazing result would not have been possible without support and input from Kingston City Council and the Friends of Mentone Station and Gardens.
